Mereka semua hadir untuk "Slide On Sunday".

Buried in East Jakarta, is an area known as Baja Otomotif Superblok. Smack bang in the middle of a suburb of heavy industry is a multi-discipline moto circuit sprawled across the five hectares. It’s wrapped around an iron processing and recycling factory, filling up the disused yards and one time service crevices.

You arrive through a canyon of sheds that ricochets’ the rumble and elaborates the engine noise, it rises with the reverberation of the iron processing machines that are still operational to this day. We pass through a small alley now filled with custom motorcycles of various styles. On the opposite side are food booths set up by custom motorcycle communities. The place is pock marked with Bengkels who have arrived before us and are now set about preparing their bikes for the upcoming race. Even before we reach the end of the alley, we are welcomed by our friends from Solace Motorcycle, 645 Magazine, Human On Wheels, Manasi Ride, and Barokah Jaya.

The alley opens into a larger area, a quick look from left to right told us we’d arrived at the circuit. A hue of red earth kicked up by the dual-purpose motorcycle tires hangs across the area. Riders are flying around on the test track, adding an adrenaline shot that amplifies the upcoming race sensation. It's bound to be a challenge for Dede Juntha, it’s his first time at the event. Sandi Maulana, who drove up from Sukabumi, was here last year, everyone within earshot were all there for one purpose, to join the race organized by 645 Magazine… They were all there to "Slide On Sunday".

We set up camp and got our bearings. Riders need to re-register onsite. Dede was going to join the 4-Stroke Upright Engine class, while Sandi was there to join the Big Bore, Small Bore Flat Engine, Corsa, and 4-Stroke Upright Engine classes. With the paperwork out of the way, we went back to the bike prep.

The grimy and shadeless paddock area, while an incredibly harsh environment, was the perfect place for this red earth track. The organizers occasionally sprinkled water on some turns to hold it all together, or make it incredibly slippery, we weren’t sure which, but it offered racers a chance to execute high-speed counter-steering turns and that’s what everyone was there for.

The races are intense, with at least six bikes in each class lining up at the starting line. The race begins with a long straight stretch that includes high mounds (Table Tops) and challenging turns that force riders to balance the control of their throttle, brakes, and some extreme engine braking to navigate without being overtaken. The last turn, a 60-degree bend (Jig Hook), is a favorite of the riders whose bikes might not be as powerful as their opponents. This turn proves that speed isn't everything in this race. Sandi Maulana, with extensive experience on different types of tracks, manages to conquer it and secures 1st place in Class 3 of the Small Bore Flat Engine and 1st place in the Big Bore class. Dede, was leaning heavily into his teammate's performance, aggressively attacking in the 4-Stroke Upright Engine class. Despite an exceptional start on the final lap, Dede lost his lead in the last turn, and to add insult to injury he fell and stalled his bike. Nevertheless, this loss doesn't define Dede, who's new to circuit racing. This experience only built on his racing spirit firing him up for the next competitions.

After the sun had already dipped behind the sheds, the afternoon moved towards a natural end and the races concluded. Now was the time to announce and congratulate the winners on the podium, one by one, they get up to rousing applause and to receive their well won trophies from this year’s, Slide On Sunday.

Massive thanks to the guys behind the lens.
